Redesigning Innovation Dynamics

Based on the feedback from the participants, we made a few adjustments to the process (hey, we said it is all about emergence, didn't  we?).

Our idea creation phase (and space) become much more, well, creative (or we think so). It also became more focused, since the participants are triggered with the questions and various inspirational materials right at the place of ideation and idea generation:

Rein Spire already presented newly redesigned ideation space last Monday

He will do it again today, Wednesday July 9, at noon at SL time  (9 pm CET). Everybody is most welcome to joint the show! Visit us at Philips Design's island in SL.

Second Tour, Different Dynamics

This Friday we organized the second tour for our Ideation Quest, with new participants, and also slightly new dynamics of the event. Noticebly  less people come this time...

but the discussions and conversations were somehow more intense, and more focused.

Rein Spire confidently guided participants through all the stages and procedures of the Ideation Quest (fixing minor 'issues' on a fly).

Brainstorms at the 'collaboration' part of the Quest were not merely a demonstration of the phase, but really evoked a lively debates about the future of sustainable living.

But what is even more interesting, this time participants were much more active in submitting their idea, or rather creations, at the Creativity stage of the quest. Some of the contributions were REALLY BIG!

But apart of their size, they were interesting and thought-provoking too, since quite a few participating avatars stayed at the platform and continued their discussions:

The Quest, meanwhile, is moving on; stay tuned!

First Ideation Quest Tour

The very first presentation of the Ideation Quest to the public was a true success. Not only we got quite a crowded gathering at the island, but also a very curios and empathic audience.  At its peak, more  thank 30 people  followed the guided tour along the different  phases and zones of the quest.

The audience was very diverse - journalist and architects, developers and digital celebreties, old friends and new buddies. After a short  intro of the new island's layout by Dolf Rhino, the crowd was introduced to the Ideation Quest itself, its rationale and 'rules of the game'.  Rein Spire from the University of Innsbruck and the man behind the Quest's 'gameplay' guided people through all the stages of the exercise.

An inspirational materials from the Habitat probe had been indeed found inspiring by many participants - but also well-designed and thought provoking.  In fact, already at this very first stage many participants started to ask  where they can submit their ideas :)

The procession then went through various quests and playful tasks aimed at preparing the quest participants to generate more creative yet relevant ideas. These tasks include free word association, sentence completion, and collaborative - while also competitive - brainstorm.

At the final stage, where all the creations of the Quest will be eventually presented, people shared their first impressions. " Good stuff!", "Thanks for the tour!" and "We'll be back.:-)" where among the most commonly expressed ones.

But there was a lively discussion about this innovative format to support and encourage creative activities. Some people found it a bit too linear (yet they reserved their judgments till after they will fully experience the Quest themselves); they were also discussions about the impact of collective, collaborative creativity on such traditionally artist-driven disciplines as architecture.

Only future will show, but at least there are all the signals that this Ideation Quest will have the future in the next few weeks!

Ideation Quest: Relaunch of Philips Design activities in Second Life

In June 2008 Philips Design re-launched its activities in Second Life, this time on its own island called Philips Design Experiences.  We will continue our journey into this virtual world, our conversations and working with people, to co-create new ideas and solutions and to imagine new futures.  We have big plans, and have exiting ideas to explore.

We will start with the ‘Ideation Quest’ in Second Life. This is, we believe, is an innovative and playful way to engage people in the creation of ideas and concepts. We see at as the logical continuation of Philips Design’s ongoing exploration into virtual worlds as a platform for co-creation and innovation.

In this initial Ideation Quest, Philips Design invites people to participate exploring the topic of sustainable living in the future. Participants at the Philips Island will follow a route of five playful and creative steps, inspired by the design concept - Off the Grid: Sustainable Habitat 2020. This concept looks at possible solutions for energy and housing issues predicted in the year 2020. Off the Grid is part of the Philips Design Probe program and is a continuation of the SKIN Probe which was listed as “best inventions of 2007” by TIME magazine.

The Quest will begin at the new Philips Design Co-creation island in SL on Monday June 16th at SLT 12 PM (CEST 21:00) and will continue for 4 weeks (SLurl). The Ideation Quest is a collaboration between the University of Innsbruck, Avaty and Philips Design.

Sharing knowledge with SL residents

Philips Design's team conducted a number of meetings (or 'gatherings' as we used to called them) with the residents of this virtual world, where we shared our experience of design and innovations. These gatherings had been very well received (and also very well attended), by a very diverse audiences of SL.

Participants of these meetings shaped a core of our SL community, Philips Design Friends; many of them also participated in our in-depth qualitative study of the avatars' activities in Second Life.

Entry to Second Life

In April 2007Philips Design has entered Second Life with its Co-creation Experience stand.  Using this virtual design studio, Philips Design was exploring new ways to collaborate and engage with Second Life residents.

Visitors to the Co-creation Experience stand have been invited to join the 'Philips Design Friends Group' and participate in collaborative activities aimed at further understanding people's motivations and desired experiences in virtual immersive environments. In addition, visitors to the Co-creation Experience stand could receive free virtual Philips products and learn more about Philips Design.
